Portugal’s Labor Party calls for Miguel Albuquerque’s immunity to be lifted

The Portuguese Labor Party (PTP) wants to lift the parliamentary immunity of the outgoing regional government president, Miguel Albuquerque, who is involved in an investigation into allegations of corruption, the PTP candidate for the regional elections, Dionisio Andrade, said this Monday.

This Monday the party gathered in front of the Quinta Vigia in Funchal, the official residence of the President of the Madeira Executive, to defend corruption in Madeira, which it considers a “scourge”.

The candidate said that if his party is elected in early elections on May 26, he will propose to the Madeiran parliament to revoke the parliamentary immunity of Miguel Albuquerque, who resigned as president of the regional government and will return to the post of head of government. list for PSD.

The PTP wants Albuquerque to answer for the crimes prosecutors accuse it of and to have “tight oversight over the use of public money,” he said.

Accompanied by the head of the party list in the early elections, Raquel Coelho, Dionisio Andrade said that the region’s financial and natural resources were being wasted by “just half a dozen financial tycoons.”

The candidate accused Miguel Albuquerque (PSD) of worsening the situation given the times of the “corrupt regime of Dr. Jardim,” referring to the former president of the regional government of Madeira, Alberto Joao Jardim, who is now creating even “more lobbies.” and more monopolies.”

“And we want to end this protection of large economic groups. The economy of Madeira must be at the service of all the people of Madeira and all of Porto Santos,” he said.

In 2011, the PTP won three seats in the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, and in 2015 it joined the coalition “Change” (PS/PTP/PAN/MPT), which dissolved after the electoral law, and was represented by a deputy, although there was no was, managed to be elected in the last two regional elections.

The Madeira legislature has 14 candidates vying for 47 seats in the regional parliament in one constituency: ADN, BE, PS, Livre, IL, RIR, CDU (PCP/PEV), Chega, CDS-PP, MPT, PSD, PAN , PTP and JPP.

The early elections will take place eight months after the last regional legislative elections, after the President of the Republic dissolved the Parliament of Madeira following the political crisis provoked in January, when the leader of the regional government (PSD/CDU-PP), Miguel Albuquerque, was named as a defendant in the process, in during which suspicions of corruption are being investigated.

In September 2023, the PSD/SDS coalition won without an absolute majority and elected 23 deputies. The PS received 11 mandates, the JPP five, Cega four, and the CDU, IL, PAN (which signed an agreement on parliamentary influence with the Social Democrats) and BE received one mandate each.
