PS promotes projects to expand support for student housing and reduce VAT on electricity

This Monday, the PS presented a proposal to expand student accommodation support for displaced middle-class students and will promote an initiative to reduce VAT on electricity to combat energy poverty.

According to information provided to Lusa by an official PS source, the party has scheduled a debate on the 24th on the reduction of VAT on electricity as a measure to combat energy poverty, during which its bill will be discussed, and the housing initiative Student will be involved in the debate planned by BE on The 22nd is titled “The Good Life: A Home to Live In and a Time to Live.”

With these two projects, the PS completes the five measures that were announced by PS Secretary General Pedro Nuno Santos in early April during the debate on the government’s PSD/CDS-PP program.

A bill to approve “a legal regime for additional accommodation extending it to displaced non-scholarship students from households with annual incomes lower than those included in the IRS Group 6 limit” was introduced this Monday in Parliament.

According to a PS source, under this project, displaced students who do not have government scholarships for higher education, whose families have income up to the sixth IRS level, will be able to request accommodation in university residences and receive a housing allowance, which will be higher if there is no place in residences.

The Socialists’ goal is that the current regime in place for scholarship holders can be extended to students from middle-class families, estimating that this measure would have a budgetary effect of 11 million euros, according to the macroeconomic scenario of the electoral program.

In addition to providing relief to middle-class families, the same PS source believes that this measure is responsible and consistent with the increase in supply, taking into account the work that is underway across the country in the National Placement Plan for Higher Education Persons.

The CoP seeks to ensure the stability of this support and, to this end, proposes the creation of a legal regime to replace what is currently determined by the order.

If the VAT on electricity is reduced “to combat energy poverty,” according to a PS representative, this project will be presented to parliament on Tuesday.

The legislative initiative will propose to apply a reduced VAT rate, that is, 6%, “to the first 200 kWh of electrical energy consumed each month (doubling the current 100 kWh), or 300 kWh monthly, in the case of large families (doubling the current 150 kWh).”

Announcing the measure in parliament, Pedro Nuno Santos said the cuts would affect more than three million Portuguese.
