The man suspected of killing Josiel Rodriguez was caught by the Judicial Police (SP) through his girlfriend, who was being followed by the authorities and who he was going to meet in Lisbon.
After the death of 25-year-old António Mascarenhas, known as “Kenny”, was involved in an accident with a car in which he left documents, his and Joziela’s, inside. The man fled the Algarve for Lisbon and asked his girlfriend, whom he met several times, to hide from the authorities by boarding several trains and buses.
Kenny spent the night in different places, moved from house to house, he did not have a mobile phone. However, he continued to date his girlfriend, who was followed by PJ. It was at one of these meetings that the man was arrested.
Kenny was surprised by the authorities, he was not armed but tried to escape. They took him back to the Algarve last Wednesday to attend the court of Faro on Thursday morning. He was only charged with the latest murder – the court was still substantiating evidence of the crime discovered in August – but the prosecutor, who was present in court, demanded the release of the suspect. He said there was not enough evidence, he only helped establish the identity and length of residence, which the judge agreed to, leading to the release and re-arrest of “Kenny”. This time for traffic.
On the day Josiel Rodriguez’s body was thrown into the ravine, “Kenny” was in a bar near Orik. That’s when he tried to use the victim’s credit card to pay a €200 drinking bill.
