The Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities unblocked the protest and resumed its activities in full

This Tuesday, the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FCSH) of the Universidad Nova de Lisboa opened access to one of the buildings renovated three days ago as a result of the protest “Students to Stop Genocide and End Fossils”.

“We would like to inform you that on Tuesday morning, Building C, which had been blocked for three days by a group of students identified as Students for the End of Genocide and the End of Fossils, was able to gain access to the interior, allowing students, faculty and the entire community to gain access to the interior. NOVA FCSH,” an official FCSH source said in a note sent to Lusa.

The same source added that “all activities planned for Building C will resume” as of today, despite warning that there may be “some restrictions due to necessary cleaning of the premises.”

Last Saturday, FCSH management expressed concern in a statement about the development of the protests, which have been going on for more than a week, saying that the group’s actions “caused damage to the blocked building” by breaking down the entrance door to the roof. and preventing scheduled classes and teacher access to offices.

The university management stressed that from the very beginning it had maintained “the principle of dialogue and mutual understanding regarding this protest, especially to protect causes of undeniable significance,” but left the appeal.

“NOVA FCSH appeals to the common sense of the students participating in this protest so that the previously open line of dialogue can be resumed,” he emphasized.

This Monday, the End Genocide, End Fossils movement expressed bewilderment at the college leadership’s stance and lamented FCSH’s “lack of historical and current understanding of the meaning and purpose of the protest.”

“The leadership’s position is also clear because if it truly perceived these crises as it claims, it would not prevent or criticize this type of protest. Objection to a minimally destructive peaceful demonstration when millions of lives are at stake, an ongoing genocide. and the future of all its students is to ignore the seriousness of the situation,” can be read in a note sent to the editorial office.

The students stated that “this action occurs in the context of a student uprising that began in the United States and has spread to the rest of the world” and that “several schools are already actively pursuing the slogan ‘End Fossils, End Genocide.’

This student movement demands that the government defend an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and a plan that will end the use of fossil fuels by 2030 in Portugal.

The movement’s statement states that “after classes in the Departments of Psychology, Departments of Fine Arts and FCSH, students announce that they will expand their struggle space to more departments in the coming days and declare that they will continue to resist any attempts at repression.”

The students are also calling on society at large to join a march on June 8 to the European Parliament in Lisbon, where they intend to denounce the European Union’s lack of response to the genocide in the Gaza Strip and the climate crisis.
