The President of the Republic warned on Tuesday that Portugal could have problems absorbing European funds if there is a “budgetary crisis” between this year and next.
“It is necessary to manage European funds, make up for lost time and speed up execution. And the decisive years are between this year and 2025. Everything that happens between the budget crisis is not good news,” warned Marcelo Rebelo de Souza.
The head of state spoke with journalists on the sidelines of the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Arpad Senes – Vieira da Silva Museum in Lisbon.
“That’s why I said it’s good that the 2024 budget was voted on, it was voted on and it’s valid for the whole year. “I think the same way about 2025: it’s good that they voted for the 2025 budget, because if it doesn’t, there could be a risk that it will create problems in practice when using European funds,” he warned.
A day after attending a luncheon celebrating the 40th anniversary of the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP), held at the Convent of São Francisco in Coimbra, Marcelo stressed that mayors are “very committed to using European funds.”
Asked if this worries socialist mayors, Marcelo replied that “it worries all mayors, because mayors are a fundamental thing, all of them, regardless of party, with or without a party, are fundamental to getting the job done.” Earth”.
“And so it is important for them to know that everything that is received from Brussels and contracted reaches the field. To reach the field, there must be no noise that could lead to a sudden political crisis regarding the budget,” he insisted.
The next state budget for 2025 will be presented to the Assembly of the Republic by the minority government of the SDS/CDU-PP in October.
