BE Caravan heads to 11 districts with focus on climate change and social rights

Between street actions and rallies, BE’s European Elections campaign plans to cover 11 constituencies and focus on topics such as climate change, women’s rights and the LGBTQIA+ community or the fight against financial crime.

Under the motto “Europe for you: save the future”, the blockade caravan, whose list was headed by previous coordinator Katarina Martins, has already planned some election actions for this weekend, but the official start is scheduled for Monday, the 27th.

According to the preliminary programme, the party plans to cover 11 districts, with a particular focus on Lisbon, Porto and Setubal, as well as holding actions in Aveiro, Beja, Leiria, Santarem, Coimbra, Vila Real, Viseu and Braga.

In a conversation with Lusa, campaign director Adriano Campos detailed that one of the central themes of the campaign will be climate change.

“Over the course of two weeks we will try to implement some initiatives throughout the country, domestically and also in areas particularly affected by extreme events, such as the drought problem in the Algarve, where we will be on Sunday. and then we will try to move on to other extractivist issues, such as lithium in Montalegre, where we will be next week,” he listed.

The BE aims to give “high priority” to “the role of the European Union in relation to the climate emergency and the need to take action for a just transition.”

Another of the themes that the blockers plan to use in the campaign is social rights, such as women’s rights, the LGBTQIA+ community or the defense of equal pay, with the rise of the far right among their “targets”.

The party also wants to talk about work, anticipating initiatives related to the rights of digital platform workers, linking this topic with the rights of immigrants, since many of these couriers or drivers have foreign citizenship.

“We will also talk about public services in some schools across the country and try to introduce measures to regulate market regulation and combat financial crime, which has been one of the areas in which BE has distinguished itself in recent years,” he said.

Regarding the type of actions, Adriano Campos said that BE will follow its traditional campaign model: in the morning – actions dedicated to a topic or proposal, in the afternoon – contacts with the population, in fairs or streets, and in the evening – rallies and dinners.

When asked about the presence of BE coordinator Mariana Mortagua in the campaign’s actions, the person in charge assured that “no one will miss” the leader of this campaign, who “will take part in a significant part of the actions and rallies.”

In addition to Mariana Mortagua, the campaign manager expected a “fundamental mobilization” of the party, with the participation of former MEP and current member of the Assembly of the Republic Marisa Matias, as well as party founders, deputies and other leaders. .

BOE acknowledges the difficulty of mobilizing voters in European elections, which recorded around 70% abstention in 2019, but will try to buck the trend by aiming to “strengthen its electoral performance” after electing two MEPs in the last European elections. .who were part of the Left Group in the European Parliament – GUE/NGL.

Adriano Campos said the party is going into action with “great confidence”, noting that BE is experiencing a “good moment” after registering a “strengthening following” in recent months.

The official campaign for the European elections will begin on the 27th and end on June 7th, with voting scheduled for the 9th.
