André Ventura reacted this Sunday to the elections in the Autonomous Region of Madeira and said that Miguel Albuquerque does not have the political conditions to remain at the head of the regional government.
Chegi’s leader also said that Miguel Albuquerque’s victory was not the result that the far-right party had hoped for.
Andre Ventura also spoke of “regional and national victory in removing the far left from institutions.”
“This will not happen in any government led by Miguel Albuquerque. I believe that it will be possible to achieve some form of mutual understanding, and if it is without Miguel Albuquerque and without these main characters, then it will be possible to even achieve a broader understanding within four years with these heroes no,” he said.
Andre Ventura spoke to reporters at the party’s national headquarters in Lisbon after the results of early regional legislative elections in Madeira were counted, in which the PSD won by falling short of an absolute majority of five deputies.
“Miguel Albuquerque has no conditions to remain at the head of the regional government,” he said, noting that if “the PSD decides to change his candidacy for the post of president of the regional government, a whole negotiation process could begin.”
President Chegui stated that he had made it “clear” to the Chegui/Madeira structure that “there are no agreements with Miguel Albuquerque.”
“There is no possibility of a governance agreement with Miguel Albuquerque,” he insisted, arguing that “the PSD must change the cycle and understand that the result of these elections was a change in the cycle” and “will favor stability, but will not accept concessions to its principles.”
The Chegi leader did not rule out reaching a level other than the government agreement, including an agreement on parliamentary advocacy. Andre Ventura found this “very unlikely” but said he wanted to prevent the region from being “forced into elections every three months.”
Ventura appealed to the “common sense” of the PSD to propose a team that would pave the way for “a parliamentary consensus that would ensure a scenario of fiscal and political stability for the next four years.”
“I call on Luis Montenegro and Miguel Albuquerque to understand that this political cycle needs to change. A country cannot hold elections every three or four months, but it is not enough to use blackmail or pressure, one must respect integrity, fight corruption and be firm in one’s principles. If this happens, we will be here, if not, don’t count on us,” he said.
Another condition for Chega will be an audit of the region’s reporting, as well as the presence of an anti-corruption department in the new regional government.
Regarding the election results, André Ventura emphasized that “The number of Chegi votes increased” despite maintaining the same number of deputies in the regional parliament (four), and said that the victory of Miguel Albuquerque “was not the result” that the party had hoped for. .
President Chegi also emphasized the “central role” his party is “acquiring in regional political life”, pointing out that “no natural majority of the right will be formed without Chegi’s presence.”
“Chega becomes a pivotal, decisive and key element of governance in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, being able to influence its governance in favor of the people of Madeira and Porto Santens, in a brutal and decisive fight against corruption, nepotism and disorderly connections between the State, companies and businesses, which They have been destroying the lives of our citizens for decades,” he said.
The Chegi leader also mentioned the “exclusion of the far left from the regional parliament” as “both the BE and the CDU remained on the sidelines”, failing to elect a single deputy. In the last regional elections, the BE and CDU parties each won one deputy.
“In that sense, it is a regional and national victory to remove the far left from our institutions once and for all,” he said.
According to preliminary official results, the PSD won the early regional legislative elections in Madeira this Sunday, falling short of an absolute majority of five deputies when all parishes were counted.
According to the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Social Democrats received 36.13% of the votes and 19 seats in the regional parliament, consisting of a total of 47 deputies.
In second place, the PS received 11 elected, followed by the AKP with nine, Chega with four, SDS-PP with two, and IL and PAN with one MP each. The BE and the CDU leave the Legislative Assembly compared to the previous composition.
An absolute majority requires 24 seats.
