PTP regrets that Madeirans have become accustomed to living in conditions of corruption

The head of the PTP/Madeira list said this Monday that the results of Sunday’s early regional elections, in which the PSD won without an absolute majority, demonstrate that the people of Madeira are accustomed to living with corruption.

“Corruption is part of everyday life. People not only did not punish corrupt parties, but also supported parties that support corruption, namely CDS and PAN,” Raquel Coelho said in an interview with Lusa.

This is how the head of the list of the Portuguese Labor Party (PTP) reacted to the result of early regional legislative elections in Madeira on Sunday, in which the party received 0.90% of the votes (1222).

This Sunday’s elections were won by the PSD, which received 36.13% of the votes (49,103) and elected 19 deputies, falling short of the target of 24 to achieve an absolute majority.

It was followed by the PS with 11 MPs, the JPP which rose to nine MPs, Chega with four MPs, the CDS-PP with two and the IL and PAN each elected one representative.

“I think Madeira wants to copy the good examples (in quotes) that we have on the continent. We want to have our own Isaltino Morais. [presidente da Câmara Municipal de Oeiras]”It’s not like that,” Raquel Coelho asked ironically, complaining that Madeirans don’t believe there are other politicians or other parties who can “do better.”

Anticipating post-election scenarios, the head of the PTP list foresaw agreements between the SDP, SDS-PP and Chega.

“I am convinced that this is the script. We have the SDS, which obviously if the SDP gives them the post of President of the Assembly, and I think that is what is on the table. Next we have Chega. There will be some kind of agreement.” be it parliamentary influence or proposal by proposal,” he predicted.

Fourteen candidates competed in a single circle for 47 seats in the regional parliament: ADN, BE, PS, Livre, IL, RIR, CDU (PCP/PEV), Chega, CDS-PP, MPT, PSD, PAN, PTP and JPP.

The early elections in Madeira took place eight months after the last regional legislative elections, after the President of the Republic dissolved the Madeira parliament following a political crisis triggered in January when the leader of the regional government (PSD/CDU-PP), Miguel Albuquerque, was named as a defendant in the case on investigation of suspicions of corruption.
