PSD/Madeira wins regional elections but does not have an absolute majority

PSD/Madeira won yesterday’s regional elections, but without an absolute majority, meaning its leader Miguel Albuquerque needs the support of the opposition to have the parliamentary support of 24 deputies (47 in total) and thus be able to form a government. Another winner of the evening was Juntos Pelo Povo, which, with a significant increase in votes and mandates, could become decisive for the political future of the region.

“The results are easy to interpret, we are ready to implement what the population decides: to create a stable government. We are ready to dialogue with the parties within the framework of responsibility,” Miguel Albuquerque said yesterday after his victory speech, in which he emphasized that “the PSD won in nine of the 11 municipalities” of the autonomous region. which, in his opinion, proves that “the majority of the people of Madeira and Porto Santens believe” in the party.

On the contrary, Paulo Cafofo’s party was among the losers, falling behind the winning party by 20 thousand votes, as Albuquerque emphasized. Chega was another political force that did not live up to the expectations stated by its leaders, as it did not register the significant increase in votes expected by Andre Ventura.

However, the parties to the left of the PS fared worse as the BE and PCP lost the only MPs they had.

JPP was one of the evening’s winners

The regional party Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP), led by Elvio Souza, stood out as one of the big winners of the evening, gaining expression in terms of votes and mandates and winning one of the municipalities for the first time in a regional election. that’s all that happened in the municipality of Santa Cruz. JPP will be one of the determining parties in the formation of the regional government.
