Compliance with the 24-hour strike by workers at Transportes Sul do Tejo (TST), which manages the road network in the Setubal region, was about 85% by 8 a.m. Tuesday, a union source told Lusa.
“By 8 a.m. there should have been 200 cars on the street and only 17 left Laranjeiro station,” explained Sara Gligo, leader of the Federation of Transport and Communications Unions (Fectrans).
TST, which employs approximately 900 people, serves the municipalities of Almada, Seixal and Sesimbra.
The workers, who had already held a 24-hour strike on May 9, decided at Monday’s plenary meeting to maintain the strike planned for today and set two more strike days, June 5 and 25.
The plenary meeting was convened by the Portuguese Union of Road and Urban Transport Workers (STRUP), affiliated to the Federation of Transport and Communications Trade Unions (Fectrans), and the National Union of Drivers (SNMOT), to inform workers about the proposal outlined in the meantime presented by TST operating in the area Setubal, at a meeting held on May 20.
Sara Gligo, director of Fectrans, explained in statements to the Lusa agency that the company has made some changes to the original proposal, canceling for example the obligation to pay the food allowance by card, one of the workers’ demands, increasing the amount to 7.30 euros from 1 June.
On the other hand, he added, the company has also expressed its willingness to apply a 5.89% increase in 2024 with a minimum increase of 60 euros.
In addition, the company can also compare the salaries of TST workers as of December 31 with the salaries paid by Alsa Todi (which operates in the municipalities of Alcochete, Barreiro, Moita, Montijo, Palmela and Setúbal) so that workers in the Setúbal peninsula maintain wages at the same level.
However, the union leader explained, workers understand that the company’s proposed values still do not reach the €80 increase and €9.60 food allowance they demand, so they ratified the strike planned for Tuesday and planned two more days of strike – June 5 and 25.
