Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) said on Tuesday it was trying to “create an alternative that would be historic” with the PS in Madeira, but believes it is “very likely” that the PSD will govern the region, criticizing a possible agreement with the SDS-PP.
“Jose Manuel Rodriguez [presidente do CDS/Madeira] He had already received a pair of 18th-century walkers for use at court. Well, this is already the path to mutual understanding, so I am starting to talk a little about this decision,” said JPP Secretary General and MP elected to the Madeira legislature, Elvio Souza, referring to a possible understanding between PSD and CDS-PP to govern the region .
Elvio Sousa spoke after the hearing with the representative of the Republic of Madeira, Ireneu Barreto, who on Tuesday receives seven parties with parliamentary representation in Funchal after Sunday’s regional elections, in order of increasing voting: PAN (one deputy), IL (one), SDS-PP (two), Chega (four), SPP (nine), PS (11) and SDP (19).
Regarding the joint decision of the PS and JPP to govern the region and break with the 48-year power of the PSD, Elvio Sousa indicated that it remains, despite the fact that it is “very likely” that Miguel Albuquerque will remain at the head of the regional government.
“I don’t know if he’s dead yet [a solução conjunta entre PS e JPP], because we are still waiting for contacts. Discussions are ongoing,” he said.
The JPP leader entered the Palácio de São Lourenço, the official residence of the representative of the Republic in Madeira, with the book “Pequeno Manual para a Vida”, which contained “10 simple rules for a happy life”, highlighting one of them: “When you dedicate yourself to do something, don’t hold back and don’t be ashamed of being seen doing it.”
Elvio Souza called the agreement between the PS and JPP “a manual for survival or an alternative”, expressing his “clear conscience” and repeating that “Miguel Albuquerque must be punished, and he was [nas eleições]Because the budget was not approved, the region, families and companies ended up in this situation.”
Stressing that the AKP did not talk to any party before the elections, the party leader said that “only on Monday” he received the PS’s call for mutual understanding, which “was not and was not a coalition, it is just a declaration of interests”, which was prepared “on a weak fire, no […] in a pressure cooker,” and which was awarded to SDU-PP, IL and PAN.
Among the principles of the agreement are the reduction of government structure, preventing and combating corruption, mobility and transport, including ferry, reducing waiting times in the healthcare sector and investment in housing.
“We could sit on the sofa – as some parties say they don’t want something or something – and wait quietly,” criticized Elvio Souza, believing that “history would not forgive” for the PPP to remain “undaunted” and serene” without trying a different approach.
According to the Secretary General of the AKP, the representative of the republic said that he “does not expect” mutual understanding with the PS, “but this is still a decision.”
However, Elvio Souza said, according to what he read in the press, “Miguel Albuquerque himself invited José Manuel Rodríguez to run for office, so he is already on his feet.”
He noted that JPP did not invite CDS-PP to participate in this agreement, unaware of any invitation from PS.
“If another solution appears today [que não a de PS e JPP]“This is democracy at work,” he said, explaining that the joint agreement “applies only to this declaration of principles.”
Regarding the criminal investigations related to the PSD/Madeira leader, the AKP Secretary General believes that “Miguel Albuquerque is tainted by alleged cases of corruption.”
And, he added, if he returns to head the regional government, “sooner or later he will be on the brink again.”
Regarding the possible discrediting of voters in the PPP, Elvio Souza stressed that “every courage carries a risk,” ensuring that the party’s organs are consulted on an understanding with the PS, which “is not a marriage, is not a coalition.” .
Regarding the existence of judicial investigations against PS/Madeira leader Paulo Cafofo, a JPP spokesman said “there is a presumption of innocence.”
The Parliament of Madeira consists of 47 deputies, so 24 elected representatives are needed to form a majority.
In Sunday’s elections, Miguel Albuquerque’s PSD (President of the Madeira Executive since 2015) again won the regional legislatures and elected 19 deputies, claiming it was ready to provide a “government of stability”, but the PS believed there was room to create an alternative.
On Monday, the PS and JPP announced a “joint government decision” in the archipelago, which will be presented to the representative of the Republic in Madeira, calling on the participation of the remaining parties, with the exception of the PSD and Chega, “to ensure more reliable parliamentary support.”
The early elections in Madeira took place eight months after the previous regional elections, after the President of the Republic dissolved the Parliament of Madeira following a political crisis triggered in January when the leader of the regional government (PSD/CDU-PP), Miguel Albuquerque, was named as a defendant in a criminal investigation into suspicions in corruption.
