PS Madeira says the representative’s decision could trigger an “unprecedented crisis”

PS Madeira on Tuesday considered that the decision of the representative of the Republic to nominate Social Democrat Miguel Albuquerque to form a government in the region is “the worst” for the people of Madeira and could plunge the archipelago into an “unprecedented crisis.”

“We know that this is the worst decision for the people of Madeira and Porto Santo, because it could not guarantee, does not guarantee and is unlikely to guarantee the stability or future of our region,” Marta Freitas, secretary general of the Socialist Party (PS) of Madeira, told the agency Lusa.

The Socialist regretted the statement made by the representative of the Republic, Ireneu Barreto, after he listened on Tuesday to the representatives of the seven parties with elected representatives in last Sunday’s regional elections at the Palacio San Lourenzo, that he would nominate Miguel Albuquerque (PSD) as chairman of the regional government, believing that the joint decision of the PS and JPP “had no chance of success.”

“The PS of Madeira and Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP), as you have seen, have, in a responsible approach, presented the conditions for an alternative that can restore hope to Madeira and Porto Santo and provide the stability and governance that is needed at this time, in this phase that is to be experienced Madeira,” emphasized Marta Freitas.

However, he added, “Taking into account the two non-minority alternatives that were presented to the representative of the Republic, it was then decided to choose the one that could plunge the region into an unprecedented crisis.”

Marta Freitas noted that the PS will now wait for the parties with seats in the Madeira Legislative Assembly to act in accordance with the positions they have taken throughout the election campaign and “keep their word” towards the PSD and its president. Miguel Albuquerque.

“We cannot believe that those who a few months ago tore up agreements and coalitions because they wanted to distance themselves from Miguel Albuquerque and the PSD can now lend a helping hand in desperation in the struggle for power,” he said.

The representative of the Socialist Party of Madeira assured that the party will “continue to fight to turn the page of Madeira” to bring this scenario to life in “a struggle that characterizes the several parties that have seats in the Legislative Assembly of Madeira.”

Asked about PS/Madeira’s position in discussing and voting on the government program and regional budget, she said that the party “has already stated that it will not support the PSD, it will remain firm in its conviction that it represents a project, an alternative that could would bring stability to Madeira.”

Early elections in Madeira took place on Sunday, eight months after the last regional elections, after the President of the Republic dissolved Madeira’s parliament following the political crisis provoked in January when the leader of the regional government (PSD/CDU-PP), Miguel Albuquerque, was named as a defendant in a trial that is investigating suspicions of corruption.

The SDP, which won the most votes, elected 19 deputies and failed to secure an absolute majority in the group of 47 parliamentarians, has already announced an agreement with the SDS-PP, consisting of two elements.

Meanwhile, on Monday the PS, which retained the parliamentary group with 11 seats, and the JPP, which increased its membership from five to nine, announced they had an agreement aimed at eliminating the SDP.
