The head of the regional government of Madeira, Social Democrat Miguel Albuquerque, will hand over the executive branch to the representative of the Republic on Tuesday, Ireneu Barreto’s office said on Friday.
According to a statement published by the Representative Office of the Republic, Miguel Albuquerque, who was appointed on Wednesday to form the XV Regional Government, will be received at the Palacio de San Lourenzo in Funchal at 16:00.
“The purpose of these hearings is to formally transfer the composition of the XV Regional Government of Madeira,” the note said.
On Wednesday, after announcing his candidacy, Miguel Albuquerque said he intended to present the executive branch to the representative of the Republic “on Monday at five o’clock, and then take office on Thursday,” referring to the 3rd and 6th. June.
PSD/Madeira, which was the party with the most votes in the early regional elections on May 26, elected 19 deputies out of 47, again failing to obtain an absolute majority (24 elected are required).
The Social Democrats subsequently negotiated a parliamentary agreement with the CDS-PP, which guaranteed two seats in Madeira’s parliament.
The PS retained the parliamentary group with 11 seats, while the JPP increased its membership from five to nine members. Chega continues to hold four seats, while IL and PAN re-elected their only MPs.
On the day of his nomination, Miguel Albuquerque believed that the conditions had been created for stability and completion of the four-year legislature.
“I have the assurance that the parties are responsible at this point,” he said, stressing that “the government has a program to present and a budget to approve by the end of July, and this is an urgent need for the region.” .
Miguel Albuquerque, who has headed the regional executive since 2015, has been in office since February due to an investigation into alleged corruption in the archipelago.
While stressing that he is not forming “provisional governments,” the PSD/Madeira leader has already admitted that without an absolute majority, it is important that the executive “occupies a position of greater dialogue, a position of greater parliamentary influence, greater parliamentary power.” consultation”.
The government official also expressed his readiness to take into account the proposals of the opposition if they are justified and sustainable.
“We cannot enter a climate of ‘cod in a pataco’, as they say, to cause a budget gap,” he warned.
Regarding his status as a defendant in an investigation into alleged corruption in Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque believes that this will not have an impact on the new leader.
Although on Monday the PS and JPP announced an agreement to form an alternative government, the representative of the Republic decided, after hearing the seven parties with seats in parliament, to nominate a Social Democrat to form the government.
Madeira’s early elections came eight months after previous regional elections, after the president of the republic dissolved Madeira’s parliament following a political crisis triggered in January by the indictment of Albuquerque.
The new parliament will take office on Wednesday. Although this is the XV regional government, the XIV Legislative Assembly will begin, since the first one had two leaders.
