The head of the Liberal Initiative list in the European Parliament said this Saturday that the problem of justice is not the independence of the courts and the autonomy of the prosecutor’s office, but the difficulty of control.
“This issue requires careful study. You have to regularly know what is going on there, and the Assembly of the Republic certainly plays a role in this,” said João Cotrim de Figueiredo while visiting the Lisbon book fair.
Thus, the first on the IL list responded to the signatories of the justice reform manifesto, who on Friday said that the Prime Minister and the Minister of Justice were “very sensitive” to the need for change in this “area” of the regime, which needs intervention.”
“The problem of justice is not the independence of the courts and the autonomy of the prosecutor’s office, I think they are sufficiently ensured, but the difficulty of monitoring what is happening in each of the institutions,” he noted.
The MEP candidate insisted that, as with other emergency plans, the court cannot simply “fiddle with the details” but must move on.
“We can’t look at the justice system and tinker with the details because either it’s structurally different or we’ll always have those doubts,” he stressed.
“If you want to know what happened to a judge who worked too slowly or made a technically incorrect decision, what happens? I experienced this as an MP and it was considered a kind of interference by political power in the judiciary.” , he emphasized.
And then add: “This is not so, this is a test.”
And the same goes for prosecutors from the prosecutor’s office (MP), you understand.
“With regard to the prosecutor’s office, we see some accusations in some investigative processes, which, as we all understand, are not particularly justified. And what happens to the prosecutors who are responsible for this work? We don’t know that either,” he further explained. .
Former PSD lawmaker Monica Quintela told reporters at the end of a meeting of five of the roughly 100 signatories of the Manifesto for Strengthening Justice with Prime Minister Luis Montenegro and Justice Minister Rita Alarcão Judice that the head of government had shown himself to be “approachable and aware” of the need to “change the bad or less good things,” pointing to administrative, financial, and criminal justice as examples.
During the meeting, the signatories of the manifesto will be informed that Luis Montenegro has already spoken with the Secretary General of the PS, Pedro Nuno Santos, so that a unification can take place between the two parties, so that, together with other parliamentary groups, justice reform measures can be put forward.
