Sebastian Bugallo warns of the urgency of solving the problem of coastal erosion

The head of the AD list in the European elections warned this Wednesday of the urgency of solving the problem of coastal erosion in Portugal and assured that it would be one of his issues in the European Parliament.

Taking advantage of World Environment Day, Sebastian Bugallo visited the beach of Puglia in the municipality of Esponsende, where houses are getting closer to the sea.

At the entrance to the beach, an inscription in blue paint on the wall warns of the problem and indicates the culprits: “the sea has overwhelmed the land, the King is helping me here, but let everyone know that the mistake was in the hands of a man.”

The AD candidate listened to Mayor Benyamim Pereira’s concerns about the need to demolish buildings and “retreat from human occupation.”

“From last year to this year we must have lost between five and ten meters of beach line,” Sebastian Bugalho later told reporters, adding that while it was “a problem that affects the entire Portuguese coastline,” he had never seen this “with the same cruelty and persistence” as in Apulia.

In this context, he assured that the Portuguese AD delegation intends to respond to these concerns in order to “promote the sea to be part of society and at the same time close to the environment.”

“For local communities, the issue of erosion is very sensitive as it often affects the local economy and affects the professional activities of people, especially fishermen,” he warned.

Benhamim Pereira said that in the face of the power of the sea there is a feeling of powerlessness “because nothing can be done.”

Even though people had put up “stops and sandbags”, the mayor said “the power of the sea is enormous and this suggests a different, more muscular type of intervention”.

Sebastian Bugalho said that “it is necessary to engage in democratic pedagogy”, and the members of his list, as candidates representing the Portuguese people, bear this responsibility.

The candidate for the European elections highlighted measures in the AD program, such as the protection of a European center guaranteeing the fight against marine pollution.

“This is a problem that needs to be resolved quickly. We often talk about the urgency of climate change, but I also think that we should start talking in Portugal about the urgency of coastal erosion, and I think we are in the right place to talk about it. and on the right day,” he believed.

Asked by reporters about support for fishermen, Bugallo said AD wants to ensure that “economic activity must be accompanied by sustainable development, but at the same time there must be rules that protect economic activity.”

“It didn’t make sense for a vessel with two fishermen to have mandatory video surveillance,” he explained, referring to the fisheries control provision that was carried over from the previous mandate.

Asked whether commentator Sebastian Bugalho would advise the Prime Minister to engage in dialogue with the opposition, he replied: “As you know, commentator Sebastian Bugallo has resigned.”

The candidate used the same argument to refuse to answer current questions such as the “lead” of the proposed new rate table for the IRS PSD and CDS-PP categories with votes against PS, PCP, BE and Livre, with Chega. abstinence.

On the other hand, the Committee on Budget and Finance approved the PS proposal to reduce IRS rates to level 6, but, unlike PSD and CDS, maintaining rates for the following levels.

“I am not a commentator, I am not a government representative, I am at the top of the list of the team that is participating in the European Parliament elections,” he said, saying the Portuguese cannot understand that these elections are “just a pro forma”.
