Almost 90% of the 252,209 registered voters voted in advance for the European elections.

Almost 90% of the 252,209 voters registered for early voting exercised their right on Sunday, the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI) told Lusa on Thursday.

According to the same source, the number of voters who voted in advance in the European elections was 225,039, corresponding to 89% of the 252,209 registered.

According to MAI, the data was shared by 308 municipal councils and covers voters on the mainland and islands.

252,209 voters registered to vote on European women’s mobility, 20% more than the 208,007 who voted in favor of early voting in the last legislative elections on March 10.

Last Sunday, anyone who registered before May 30 could vote in the municipality they chose when requesting early voting.

Voters who registered to vote in advance but were unable to do so will still be able to exercise their civic rights on election day, June 9, at the polling station of their choice in Portugal and abroad.

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, voted in advance for the European elections, which are expected to attract the votes of more than 10.8 million Portuguese who will choose 21 of the 720 MEPs.

In Portugal, 17 parties and coalitions are competing in the European elections: AD, PS, Chega, IL, BE, CDU, Livre, PAN, ADN, MAS, Ergue-te, Nova Direita, Volt Portugal, RIR, Nós Cidadaos, MPT. and PTP.

The early voting regime for mobility was established with the entry into force of Organic Law No. 3/218 on the occasion of the elections of Portuguese Members of the European Parliament in 2019.
