On September 4, Banco de Portugal will release a collector’s coin dedicated to Xutos & Pontapés, the largest Portuguese rock band. The issue is handled by Imprensa Nacional Casa da Moeda. 30,000 coins will be issued in cupronickel, 3,000 in silver and 2,000 in gold. Their denomination is 5 euros.
The commemorative coin features the letter X, which represented the band’s first graphic symbol, in the central field, to the left of the legend “Rock and Roll Since 1979”, surrounded at the top by the inscription Xutos & Pontapés. The reverse features two crossed forearms, an iconographic gesture of the orchestra. The design was developed by guitarist To Trips, who in 2023, at the invitation of the band, joined Tim, Cal, Joao Cabeleira and Guy in a series of concerts dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the Circo de Feras album.
“Xutos & Pontapés, icons of Portuguese rock since 1979, are featured on this collectible coin. Tim’s voice, Ze Pedro’s guitar and unrivaled energy marked the 45th anniversary of his career. The coin, issued in cupronickel, silver and gold, is a tribute to the nation’s largest rock band,” the issuer said in a statement.
