A man in his 30s was arrested in Portalegre on suspicion of assaulting a police officer, who was injured and taken to the San Jose Hospital in Lisbon, a PSP source told Lusa on Tuesday.
A source at the Portalegre Public Security Police (PSP) regional command said the attack took place on Sunday morning in the Republic Square, in front of the security forces’ headquarters, when a group of about 10 people, including men and women, “started clashing.”
Police arrived on the scene to “put an end to the controversy” when the PSP agent was attacked with a “punch to the face”, taken to the Portalegre hospital and then transferred to the San Jose hospital where “he will undergo surgery”, said same source.
The alleged attacker will appear in Portalegre court on Tuesday for his first judicial examination and possible enforcement action.
