New elections in Madeira are only possible from the end of January 2025.

Early regional elections in Madeira may only take place from the end of January 2025 if the failure of the regional government program and the subsequent fall of the executive again leads to the dissolution of the Legislative Assembly.

The government program, which the leader of the executive branch, Social Democrat Miguel Albuquerque, will present this Friday, will be discussed and voted on next week in the Regional Legislative Assembly in Funchal.

The PS and Chega have already announced that they will vote against the document, and since the PSD does not have an absolute majority in the Madeira Parliament, if the JPP joins in voting against it, the government program will be rejected.

In the May 26 elections, the SDP elected 19 deputies and has five terms left before achieving an absolute majority. The PS elected 11 deputies, the AKP nine, Chega four and SDS-PP two, while IL and PAN elected one deputy each. After the elections, the Social Democrats signed a parliamentary agreement with the Christian Democrats, but they are still short of the 24 seats needed for an absolute majority.

If the government program fails and the regional government falls, two scenarios will arise: the appointment of a new chief executive or the dissolution of the Madeiran parliament.

However, given that the regional legislative assemblies took place less than a month ago, the Legislative Assembly can only be dissolved by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, from the end of November, six months after the last elections.

In this case, in accordance with Article 133 of the Constitution, concerning the competence of the head of state in relation to other bodies, in order to dissolve the regional parliament, the President of the Republic will have to hear the Council of State and parties with parliamentary powers. seats.

On the other hand, according to article 19 of the Law on Elections of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, in the event of its dissolution, the President of the Republic sets the date for the election of deputies “at least 55 days in advance”. “.

Thus, it will only be possible to hold new early elections in Madeira from the end of January, with the last Sunday being the 26th, exactly eight months after the regional elections in May.

The May 26 elections also came eight months after Madeira’s legislative elections on September 24, 2023, after Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa dissolved Madeira’s parliament following a political crisis triggered in January when Miguel Albuquerque was indicted for alleged murder. corruption and resigned.

The government of Madeira was then responsible for this.

The Social Democrat has led the executive since 2015, when the party still had the absolute majority it has always had in the archipelago. In 2019, to achieve this goal it was necessary to form a post-election coalition with the SDS-PP (which was part of the regional government), and in 2023, with both parties acting together, Albuquerque entered into an agreement on parliamentary influence with Skovoroda.

In the last vote, PSD and CDS ran separately.
