The Azores government president on Monday said the region should be confident of a “bigger future than the past” based on the use of new technologies, attracting outside investors and entrepreneurs.
“The Azores have a rich history and are proud of their identity, but the current ruler must face the biggest challenge, first and foremost, to ensure that the region has more of a future than a past, no matter what greatness or praise we can make of our history “, said Jose Manuel Bolheiro.
The leader of the Azores Executive spoke at the opening of the Business Center for Information and Communication Technologies, the second building of the Science and Technology Park of San Miguel (Nonagon) in the municipality of Lagoa, on the island of San Miguel.
Bolheiro said he intends to achieve for the Azores “a future dimension that will provide regional, national, social, European and even global prestige.”
At the time, the head of the regional government argued that “expectations based on the future of the blue, space and information and communications economy can improve the ability to retain talent and attract scientific entrepreneurship, innovation and development.”
Stressing that the Information and Communications Technology Business Center could become a destination for entrepreneurs, José Manuel Bolheiro also noted that the door to the future is “opening” with a project worth 8 million euros, with 5.5 million dollars co-financed by FEDER. .
Bolheiro also added that this initiative is designed to help “attract foreign investment, which can significantly affect the areas of science, technology and innovation.”
According to the Azores government, the Business Center for Information and Communication Technologies acts as a “catalytic agent for companies already consolidated in the field of information and communication technologies.”
It brings together “multiple technology infrastructures in one building, attracting established companies either because of the business opportunities that can be created or because of their interest in innovation and finding synergies through complementarity.”
It is also “expected that the innovative nature of some elements of this infrastructure (for example, FabLab, high-performance computing, data visualization rooms) will attract interest from entities external to the Science and Technology Park, creating new opportunities for the creation of companies and projects in the region and at the same time promoting the internationalization of the scientific and technological system of the Azores,” the same note states.
Nonagon’s new space will “offer new services unique to the region, including a FabLab, data visualization room and high-performance computer, which will be funded through the Plan for Recovery and Resilience (PRR).”
