Government guarantees it ‘has not given up’ on reviewing PSP risk supplement

Interior Minister Telmo Correia guaranteed on Tuesday in Leiria that the guardianship has still “not given up” on the review of the risk premium for PSP agents.

At a ceremony marking the 150th anniversary of the PSP Leiria District Command, Telmo Correia acknowledged that “the assessment [dos agentes] is necessary and that strengthening human resources necessarily implies an attractive career and recognition of professionals working in the security forces.”

“In particular, an increase in the remuneration plan, starting with a revision of the risk premium. This is a significant issue and which, it should be noted, we have not abandoned,” the government official emphasized.

The Secretary of State believes that the changes promoted by the Ministry of the Interior (MAI) “will guarantee greater security for the Portuguese, while helping to enhance the prestige of the Public Security Police.”

“We are working on an operational restructuring of the PSP to guarantee increased policing of proximity and visibility, which involves the participation of more agents on the streets,” suggested Telmo Correia.

Another goal is to guarantee “better working conditions and better conditions for the police”, “more modern, better equipped, more technological, more dignified and valuable”.

“We need faster and more efficient policing. In 2023, an average of 33 incidents per day were called to the Leiria District Command. It was the fourth county with the highest overall crime rate, according to the Homeland Security Annual Report. , despite the fact that the number of violent crimes has decreased,” said Telmo Correia.

The governor also announced his intention to bring police “closer to citizens.”

“Education and outreach on issues ranging from drug use and trafficking to dating violence, stalking or hate crimes are an important part of these programs aimed at keeping young students safe while helping to shape the more conscious and responsible citizens,” he emphasized.
