Parliament elects five members to the State Council, proposed by the SDP, PS and Chega

This Wednesday, with 168 votes in favor, the Parliament elected the five representatives proposed by the PSD, PS and Chega in the joint list of the Council of State: Carlos Moedas, Francisco Pinto Balsemana, Pedro Nuno Santos, Carlos Cesar and Andre Ventura.

221 deputies voted in these elections.

The three parties have a total of 206 deputies. Even if one does not take into account the nine MPs who did not participate in this vote, the combined list did not receive all the yes votes from all three benches.

The election of the five members who will be appointed by the Assembly of the Republic to the Council of State, the political advisory body of the President of the Republic, took place this Wednesday afternoon in Parliament, with the votes being counted according to the Hondt method. .

The PS nominated its secretary general Pedro Nuno Santos and party president Carlos Cesar, while the PSD nominated Lisbon City Council President Carlos Moedas and again its number one activist Francisco Pinto Balsemana. Chega appointed Andre Ventura as its leader.

Even before the results were known, IL, BE and Livre criticized the PS and PSD for agreeing to submit a joint list with Chega, arguing that the option of separate lists would have been preferable.

According to the constitution, the Council of State is composed of “five citizens elected by the Assembly of the Republic in accordance with the principle of proportional representation for a period corresponding to the duration of the legislative body.”

In the previous legislature, five representatives proposed by the PS and PSD were elected on a joint list (Manuel Alegre, Carlos Cesar, Sampaio da Novoa, Francisco Pinto Balseman and Miguel Cadille), while Chega presented an alternative list but failed to elect anyone. .

If the agreement were now repeated with the participation of only the PS and SDP, Chega on his own list would still be able to elect one of the five names to the State Council with a high probability, since it currently includes more than one-fifth of the deputies.

The members of the State Council, chaired by the President of the Republic, are essentially persons holding the positions of President of the Assembly of the Republic, Prime Minister, President of the Constitutional Court, Ombudsman, Chairmen of regional governments and former Presidents of the Republic. .

It also includes five citizens appointed by the head of state for a period corresponding to the term of his mandate, in addition to the five citizens elected by the Assembly of the Republic in each legislative body.
