Suspects of ‘hello father, hello mother’ scam detained in Leiria and forced to make presentations every two weeks

The Leiria court ordered the couple, detained by the judicial police on suspicion of crimes related to money laundering and qualified fraud, as part of the investigation into the “hello father, hello mother” fraud, to make presentations every two weeks.

After being heard by a criminal judge, the couple, aged 36 and 23, were subject to coercive measures in the form of fortnightly presentations, the issuance of passports and a ban on leaving the country, a police source told Lusa.

The Leiria Criminal Investigation Department (DIC) of the Judicial Police (PJ) detained the couple in Leiria after “an intensive investigation that lasted about 10 months and which to date includes a total of 21 investigations carried out throughout the Leiria territory.” a country.”

A source in the SP told Lusa that this foreign couple used the same “modus operandi” as the “hi father, hello mom” scam, but this has nothing to do with other arrests already made by the SP within the scope of the same type of crime.

During PJ’s investigation, it turned out that the spouses, through their accounts and the accounts of third parties, received funds from the victims, which were immediately dispersed among accounts in European countries and then transferred to one of the South American countries, to accounts belonging to PJ. pair.

“The amounts obtained through fraud and laundered through circulation through national and European accounts and destined for the country of origin of the detainees amount to large tens of thousands of euros.”

The Judicial Police will continue the investigation to fully quantify and identify the number of citizens who became victims of the criminal scheme.

Taking into account the results of the evidence collected, the SP asked the holder of the criminal case (Department of Investigations and Criminal Affairs of Leiria) to issue an arrest warrant and conduct a search of the house.

During the search, “a corresponding collection of material evidence was seized, and 45 military-caliber ammunition was also seized.”
