Pedro Nuno Santos demands an explanation from PGR over the disclosure of wiretaps involving Costa

This Friday, the leader of the PS said that the Attorney General of the Republic is obliged to give the country an explanation for the “violation of the law” in the disclosure of wiretaps involving former Prime Minister António Costa, considering this insufficient to open an investigation.

At the end of a meeting with European Economic and Social Committee President Pedro Nuno Santos was asked about Justice Minister Antena 1’s interview in which he expressed “discomfort” about the use of wiretapping in legal proceedings, such as those targeting recent former Prime Minister António Costa in Operation Influential, without being directly connected with the facts of this process.

“We cannot pretend that we do not publish conversations in the media that are not even related to the process under consideration and that are being disclosed. We cannot continue to pretend that we are not witnessing a violation of the law,” he said.

According to Pedro Nuno Santos, the “only” thing that happened from the ministry was “the announcement of the start of an investigation,” which was “not enough.”

“I would say that these clarifications are due to the prosecutor’s office, and, obviously, the highest official of the prosecutor’s office is its prosecutor general. We have the right to understand what is happening, how such a violation could have occurred,” he answered the question. Should Lucilia Gago give these explanations?

According to the PS leader, one cannot agree “with what is happening” if he wants to preserve “the health of the rule of law and democracy.”

“We have the right to a public explanation. When something goes wrong in the organizations we lead, we bear responsibility for it,” he urged.

On Wednesday, the ministry launched an investigation into the leak of information in the Influencer process following the decryption of wiretapped calls between former Prime Minister Antonio Costa and then-Infrastructure Minister João Galamba.

According to information published by several news organizations, the lawmaker’s investigation is focused on wiretaps released Tuesday by CNN Portugal, including recordings of António Costa calling João Galamba to order the dismissal of TAP’s executive president for political reasons following a disputed compensation . 500 thousand euros to former administrator Alexandra Reis.
