The President of the Republic this Sunday said that he must have the same predisposition for the new government as for the previous one, for a “common front in the face of national problems”, considering it “preferable” if it is possible to have the state budget approved.
“I think I also have an obligation, if there are important problems or important decisions, even if for a shorter time and less intensely, to have the same predisposition towards a new prime minister and a new government. For a shorter period of time, because the mandate is close to completion,” answered Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa on the sidelines of the opening of the exhibition in Vila Franca de Xira when asked by journalists whether this is a new stage of coexistence with the government of Luis Montenegro.
The President of the Republic recalled how in recent years, “even sometimes causing discontent” of his political region, he understood that it was extremely important “at decisive moments to be close to the Prime Minister and the previous government”, referring to António Costa and “the financial crisis, banking crisis, fires or pandemic.”
For Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, solidarity “in decisive moments” means that the President of the Republic “is in some moments with the Parliament and in others with the Prime Minister and the Government, presenting a common front in the face of national problems.”
“There is no doubt that we are facing fundamental problems for the country. For me the most important one besides those that arose due to the war in Ukraine and that is why I called for the creation of a State Council as soon as the new members are elected, but this is the problem of the PRR because we all know that it is a race with time,” he explained.
When asked whether approval of the State Budget for 2025 is one of these issues, the President of the Republic replied that this is “another reality.”
“Obviously, if it is possible to ensure political stability, economic and financial stability and therefore make the government budget viable, I think we all agree that if that is possible, then that is preferable,” he insisted.
Marcelo Rebelo de Souza admitted that he sees such a possibility, but stressed that it “depends on the parties.”
“Knowing the experience of the past, it is good to be present precisely because we are in the worst international situation, because we are lagging behind in the PDP, because we are facing very urgent economic and financial problems, if possible. The more viable the budget, the better,” he emphasized.
