Marcelo argues that breaking judicial secrecy is an important point in reforming the sector

This Sunday, the President of the Republic said that the leak of information about the secrecy of justice is “one of the important points” that should be taken into account when reforming the sector, given that in Portugal there is an agreement on the need to rethink justice.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was questioned this Sunday by journalists about the recent disclosure of wiretaps in legal proceedings, such as those recently directed against former Prime Minister António Costa in Operation Influential Man, although they were not directly associated with the facts of this process.

“As far as I know, the Prosecutor General’s Office also announced that it is going to conduct an investigation. Portuguese democracy has been aware of the problem and debate about the secrecy of justice and leaks of information about the secrecy of justice for many years,” he said.

According to the President of the Republic, “this is a reality that has existed and has existed throughout democracy, and naturally this is one of the important points of justice reform that should be taken into account.”

“There has long been an agreement in Portuguese society regarding the rethinking of Portuguese justice, justice reform, and now this has been confirmed and this is an important task that the parties set themselves to achieve this,” he also said.

On Wednesday, the ministry launched an investigation into the leak of information in the Influencer process following the decryption of wiretapped calls between former Prime Minister Antonio Costa and then-Infrastructure Minister João Galamba.

According to information published by several news organizations, the lawmaker’s investigation is focused on wiretaps released Tuesday by CNN Portugal, including recordings of António Costa calling João Galamba to order the dismissal of TAP’s executive president for political reasons following a disputed compensation . 500 thousand euros to the former administrator Alexandra Reis.
