President Chegi said on Tuesday that, with the connivance of some of the media, the political persecution of the judiciary and the operation to whitewash former Prime Minister Antonio Costa continue.
These positions were stated by André Ventura at a press conference in which he responded to the hypothesis that the Attorney General of the Republic (PGR), Lucília Gago, will soon be heard in Parliament following the public disclosure of wiretaps involving António Costa. but which have no connection from a criminal point of view within the framework of the so-called Operation Influencer.
Regarding the hypothesis that Lucilia Gago will soon be heard in Parliament, Andre Ventura stated in general terms that Chega will never object to anyone being heard in the Assembly of the Republic.
“But for what reason are the judiciary and police only called into parliament when politicians are involved?” he asked.
For President Chega, the question is different: “They want to make us believe that the country has become a new PIDE, but Chega will not participate in the political persecution of the judiciary.” “Never in any other trial in which wiretapping was discovered has there been as much outrage as in the case of António Costa. Now this shows that the country is still a hostage to socialism, the leadership and command of António Costa,” he said.
At the press conference, among other things, Andre Ventura said that “even if Christ descends to earth,” Chega will welcome the likely election of António Costa to the presidency of the European Council. He also believes that the former prime minister is “under suspicion” as part of Operation Influential Man and that a “whitewash operation” of Antonio Costa is ongoing.
In front of journalists, President Chegi sought to convey the message that “this biggest ever attack on justice has the support of some media” and wondered why António Costa has not yet been confronted with the content of these wiretaps, especially in relation to the trial the firing of TAP’s previous executive, Christina Ourmier-Widener.
“There is not a single journalist who would have the courage to ask you why the country is facing a process of layoffs worth millions of euros, because you [António Costa] made her shoot.”
“They seem to care about the conversation, not the content of the conversation,” he added, before engaging in a discussion with TV reporters who wanted to ask him questions.
“They may be live, but I am the leader of Chegi and I am speaking. The attack that the media, commentators and some journalists are being held accountable for is shameful because they are covering António Costa in a country that is similar to North Korea or Venezuela. Unbiased media are expected not to cover anyone’s back,” he said.
President Chegi then asked himself whether “António Costa is someone above the law in Portugal and whether he is not obliged to answer when he says he wants to fire a person for political reasons.”
“António Costa is a former prime minister who is under suspicion by the Portuguese justice system. As Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said, even if Christ comes to earth, I will support António Costa as President of the European Council. But it is unacceptable that the largest operation is the usual whitewashing of a politician,” he added.
