With the election of former Prime Minister António Costa as Heads of State and Government of the European Union, Portugal becomes the only country to achieve leadership of the European Council, the European Commission and the United Nations.
The former Prime Minister of Portugal, the socialist António Costa, was elected this Thursday by the heads of state and government of the European Union as President of the European Council for a term of two and a half years, this was announced in Brussels.
According to diplomatic sources, the decision was taken at a meeting of the European Council in Brussels, where EU leaders also proposed Ursula von der Leyen’s name for a second term as head of the European Commission, which is subject only to final approval by the European Parliament, and appointed Estonian Prime Minister Kaija Kallas as the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, to be elected by MEPs from the entire College of Commissioners.
