Justice Ministry rejects ‘escalating distortion of facts’ in minister’s interview

On Thursday, the Justice Ministry rejected Chegi’s interpretation of the minister’s interview with the Observer newspaper, considering it an “escalation of distortion of words” by an official who said it was necessary to “restore order” in relation to the Public Ministry.

“The statement in question does not contain any reference or even intention to interfere with the autonomy of the public prosecutor’s office or the independence of the judiciary, as is clear from the general context of the interview. The statement has a prospective meaning, aimed only at the future,” reads a clarification from the office of Minister Rita Alarcao Judice sent to Lusa.

Chega wants to hear the justice minister’s opinion in parliament after she said “the new attorney general must restore order.”

“This expression does not correspond to the democratic system in which we live, this expression does not correspond to the system of separation of powers in which we live, but which has even worse and more harmful consequences, it is an expression that perhaps unintentionally indicates the true intentions government and, unfortunately, the Socialist Party in matters of justice,” said Chega leader Andre Ventura, speaking to reporters in parliament.

A note from the minister’s office states that “when they say ‘clean house’, it signals that a new cycle is about to begin, which will contribute to enhancing the dignity of justice, eliminating the atmosphere of tension and stress caused by the contradictions and disagreements around the judicial institutions. Any other interpretation, even if sometimes unfounded, is a distortion of the meaning of the interview, the full version of which is publicly available.”

Rita Alarcão Judice’s office also states that regardless of whether Chega has filed a request for a hearing, another hearing is already scheduled for July 17 in the parliamentary committee on constitutional issues, rights, freedoms and guarantees, which prevents any other. appointment in the previous 15 days.

The possible request could result in another round of questions from parliamentary groups being added to the hearings planned for the minister.

In an interview with Rádio Observador published today, the minister acknowledges that there is “a certain discredit” of the prosecutor’s office and wants the next attorney general of the republic to start a “new era” and “restore order.”

In the Justiça Cega program on Rádio Observador, the minister assured that the government has no doubts about the profile of the new Prosecutor General of the Republic (PGR), who will have to occupy leadership positions and deal with communications.

Following the interview, Rita Alarcao Judice confirmed the tensions in a social media post “and is fulfilling the functions” in accordance with the Constitution.

After SMMP President Paulo Lona rejected the need to “clean house” but acknowledged the need to improve prosecutorial cooperation, Chega announced his intention to summon the minister to parliament to explain the statements and the expression “clean house”, which he considers “not in keeping with either the democratic system” or the “system of separation of powers”.

In recent days, several parties have asked GRP Lucília Gago to enter parliament after wiretaps involving former Prime Minister António Costa were revealed as part of Operation Influential Man, but not directly related to this process, leading to to the fall of the party. government and early legislative elections in March.
