The Ministry of Internal Affairs assured on Thursday that restructuring measures are continuing in the police force, and clarified that the diagnosis made by the Main Inspectorate of Internal Administration dates back to the period of the previous government.
“The IGAI report was released [Inspeção-Geral da Administração Interna] regarding the verification activities carried out during the 2023 calendar year. And, as is known, this Government took office only on April 2, 2024. In the event of situations arising that relate to the period of activity of the previous Government, we will not make any comments.” This is stated in the MAI message.
The ministry’s response came after IGAI warned in a report that the PSP and GNR lacked vehicles, duty rosters that “do not guarantee 24-hour patrols” and police officers “not in sufficient numbers to ensure the functioning” of police facilities.
