The Bolivian government announced this Thursday that 17 people have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the coup attempt that rocked the South American country on Wednesday, which is in the grip of a serious economic crisis.
A nation of 12 million people watched in shock and disbelief on Wednesday as the armed forces appeared to revolt against the government of President Luis Arce, who seized control of the capital’s main square with armoured vehicles, rammed a tank into the gates of the presidential palace to try to enter it and threw tear gas at protesters.
In the following hours, Army General Juan José Zúñiga, who led the coup attempt, and an alleged accomplice, former Navy Vice Admiral Juan Arnés Salvador, were arrested and remain in custody.
