On Friday, localized heavy rainfall, accompanied by hail and thunderstorms, hit mainland Portugal. Despite no warnings from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the worst-hit place was in Alentejo: the town of Brinches, population 930.

In this parish of the municipality of Serpa, rainfall in the late afternoon reached 143 millimeters per square meter in just one hour. Local streets and roads were quickly flooded and the wall collapsed, and firefighters were called on six occasions, but there were no reports of injuries.

In Alcoutim, Algarve, 23.5mm of rain had fallen by 5pm. Trás os Montes was also hit by heavy rain, which flooded the streets of Sabrosa, Chavez and Valpasos.

In Trancoso, the heaviest rain fell at 14:00 – 24.5 mm per square meter. Nearby, in Satan, 19.1mm of rain was falling by 3pm.
