“Following the news item published this morning about the tragic sinking of a fishing vessel, the President of the Republic contacted by telephone the relatives of the dead and missing people, and following today’s visit by the Prime Minister, he will be in Figueira da Foz next Saturday,” the text says.
In a note published this morning, the head of state, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, expressed his condolences to the families of the fishermen who died in the shipwreck and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded.
In the afternoon, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro announced that he would travel to Figueira da Foz in Coimbra County to learn about the ongoing search operations and to express solidarity with the families of the victims.
Three of the 17 people on the sunken ship are still missing, three dead and 11 rescued alive, Figueira da Foz maritime police said.
Initial information indicated that seven people were missing as a result of the flooding.
According to the captain of Porto and the local head of the marine police of Figueira da Foz, Pedro Cervens Costa, the rescue operations were carried out by the rescue station of the captain of Porto da Nazaré, together with fishing vessels.
“It is still not known what happened, the ship capsized a mile west of Sao Pedro do Moel. The sea conditions were light, but the causes have not yet been determined,” he said in a statement to Figueira da Foz television.
The warning regarding the listing of the fishing vessel Virgem Dolorosa was transmitted at 04:33 to the local command of the marine police of Nazaré.
Servence Costa explained that the sunken vessel was “located and visible” and search and rescue operations were continuing with the help of an air force helicopter, a drone from Nazaré and a team of divers.
According to the President of the Marinha Grande Chamber, Aurélio Ferreira, the Virgem Dolorosa is a 24-by-six-metre trawler with a port in Figueira da Foz.
