The IL leader said on Saturday that he is not afraid of internal disagreements at the party’s national congress, which will approve its charter and political program, arguing that whatever the outcome of the main meeting, the party will emerge stronger.
“Whatever happens, whatever it is, it will always be good for the party and will give more energy to those who lead it at the moment for the political struggle and the affirmation of liberal ideas,” said IL leader Rui Rocha at the entrance to the congress, which began at 11:52 and will last until Sunday at the Europarque in Santa Maria da Feira, in the Aveiro district.
The Liberal president believed that the national convention was a “moment of affirmation” for the party, which would serve to discuss important tools for this affirmation.
The goal is “a more flexible party with a political programme more in line with the times we live in and the very character and growth of the party in recent years,” he added.
“The party has gone on a growth trajectory and the instruments that exist today are no longer adequate to support the party in the country and to allow the party to wage a more political struggle and continue its growth trajectory,” said Rui Rocha.
However, the IL president said that unless there are changes to the charter, this will not make the party’s growth impossible.
“I understand that it would be desirable to move to a more flexible version of the constitution. If members do not understand this, then this constitution is not an obstacle to the growth of the Liberal Initiative, and the facts prove it,” he said.
Rui Rocha also said he was not afraid of a scenario of internal division, given the existence of two proposals to change the statute, one presented by the IL National Council and the other by internal opponents, saying he liked “competition, debate”.
“Unanimity in the Liberal Party is something that by its nature is meaningless. So all contributions that are driven by an interest in advancing the debate in the party, in creating alternative views that are valid, are welcome because they bring diversity to the party,” he said.
Regardless of the outcome of the congress and the intensity of the debate, the IL president said he would lead the party on Monday “with the same intensity and with doubled energy” because the party would emerge stronger.
Under the motto “Always Grow”, the party is holding its VIII National Congress until Sunday at the Europark in Santa Maria da Feira, with around 1,000 members registered, divided into in-person and online formats.
At this non-elective main meeting the charter and political program will be approved.
