Mortagua warns PGR that ‘in a democracy no one is above criticism’

BE coordinator Mariana Mortagua warned on Tuesday that the Ministry of State (MP) is not above criticism, like other sovereign powers, commenting on the interview of the Attorney General of the Republic to RTP on Monday.

“In a democracy, no one is above criticism. No one. Neither the elected authorities, nor the sovereign bodies. No one is above criticism. with attacks. Because it is normal that in a democracy we want to ask questions. It is normal that we can and want to ask the Court what happens with the Court’s time,” defended Mariana Mortagua.

The BE leader spoke to journalists in the Penajõia area of the Almada municipality in Setúbal, which she visited this afternoon to draw attention to the situation of residents who fear being evicted by the Institute for Housing and Urban Rehabilitation (IHRU).

Asked about the RTP interview with the Attorney General of the Republic, Lucilia Gago, which BE wants to hear in Parliament about last year’s activity report, Mortágua considered it “normal to want to ask and that there is concern about the violation of the secrecy of Justice” or about “the abuse of means of investigation and obtaining evidence, such as wiretapping.”

“It is important that the prosecutor could give these explanations, and this is normal. This is the normal functioning of democracy. Therefore, we understood that it was important for her to get into parliament, and this requirement remains. And I think that this desire for verification should in no way be confused with any conditions of justice,” he emphasized.

Mortagua stressed that “if there was any conditioning that led the prosecutor to make a statement of this kind, it is necessary to denounce it and specifically point out the conditioning that existed, because it is serious, it is serious in a democracy.”

Asked about PS Secretary General Pedro Nuno Santos’s statement that there was “no left front” in Portugal following the French elections, in which the left-wing coalition (Nova Frente Popular) came first, Mariana Mortágua warned that political fronts “are not arithmetical games” and that they either serve “to solve people’s lives or they do not matter.”

The BE coordinator insisted on the importance of dialogue on the left and stressed that in the case of France, “there is a real alternative, and it is not a fictitious alternative.”

“There is a de facto program that breaks with Macron’s liberal program, that breaks with the far right, that does not leave an inch of space for xenophobic speeches against immigration, that presupposes immigration, the rights of immigrants, that presupposes a new policy on immigration, housing, the environment, work and wages (…) This program is the program that the Bloc de Esquerda wants in Portugal, that it defends in Portugal, and around it we want to open a dialogue, and we will continue to do so,” he said.
