The Supreme Council of the Judiciary expressed shock over the death of Joana Marques Vidal

The vice-president of the Supreme Council of the Judiciary (SCM) acknowledged on Tuesday that the death of the former Attorney General of the Republic, Joana Marques Vidal, “came as a shock”, stressing her personal admiration and her legacy as head of the public ministry. (MP)

“It was a shock. I admired Dr. Joana Marques Vidal. She was not only an outstanding woman, but also an excellent judge, and in terms of attorneys general of the Republic, she was one of the best we have had,” said Luis Azevedo Mendes in response to the news of the death of the former attorney general of the Republic at the age of 68 in the São João Hospital in Porto.

In a conversation with Lusa, the vice-president of the SCM called Joana Marques Vidal “a very good example not only for all prosecutors, but also for all judges who have contacted her”, highlighting her active intervention and ability to reflect, even after refusing the Deputy’s leadership.

Asked to describe the legacy and how the magistrate shaped the Attorney General’s Office, Azevedo Mendes highlighted Joana Marques Vidal’s openness and her coverage of all areas of the deputy’s work.

“She was an exceptional communicator. Everyone remembers her ability to communicate and she shows it at all times. She never ran away from journalists and was an example of what is required of the Attorney General of the Republic. She was a person for whom she could boast of sympathy and affection,” he emphasized, adding: “I will have to think a lot to be able to talk about the richness of her professional practice.”

Joana Marques Vidal died on Tuesday at the age of 68 after being in an induced coma following cancer surgery and eventually suffering from sepsis, a source close to the family said.

The funeral service for the former Attorney General of the Republic will take place on Wednesday from 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm at the São Lourenço Chapel in Pedàçañes, in the municipality of Águeda. The funeral ceremony will take place on Thursday at 2:00 pm and the cremation will take place at the Aveiro Crematorium.

Joana Márquez Vidal was the first woman to head the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), holding the position from 2012 to 2018, and was succeeded by Lucilia Gago.

She was appointed to the PGR in October 2012 by then President of the Republic Cavaco Silva, taking over the position previously held by Pinto Monteiro.

Joana Marques Vidal was born in Coimbra, where she was born in 1955. She graduated in law in 1978 and joined the prosecutor’s office the following year.
