Mozambique PR offers Botswana use of country’s ports, highlights cooperation successes

In Maputo on Wednesday, the President of Mozambique praised the “progress” in cooperation with Botswana in the transport sector and encouraged that country to use Mozambican ports, stressing the importance of strengthening bilateral relations.

“We are very determined in the area of rail and road transport, as well as the full exploitation of Mozambique’s ports,” said Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi while assessing the first day of the visit Botswana President, Mokgweetsi Masisi, sent to the country.

Filipe Nyusi said there was already “heavy traffic” in Mozambique and Botswana, two southern African countries, but suggested using Mozambique’s ports to bring goods in and out of the country.

“We are also designing future ports to make our country and theirs sustainable,” Nyusi said.

As part of the agreements, which are still under discussion, Mozambique’s head of state said that landlocked Botswana could also begin using Mozambique’s ports to transport its mineral resources such as coal and copper, “a resource that is still under discussion and has not yet begun to be explored in depth.”

Nyusi said Mozambique and the country were discussing cooperation on seafood marketing and promised to create a “market” for Botswana products.

“The purpose of this visit is to strengthen political and diplomatic relations, but the main focus is, first of all, on positively stimulating our economic relations,” Nyusi emphasized, highlighting existing agreements in the area of military training and progress in negotiations in the energy sector.

In turn, Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi stated that his country also has interests in strengthening cooperation with Mozambique in various areas of the economy and politics, highlighting first and foremost the tourism sector.

“We are here to improve our economic relations. Mozambique has several products and capabilities and we too are keen to share knowledge in the military, security, agriculture, livestock and we want to expand our ports, focusing on basic products such as oil,” he said.

On the first day of the Botswana President’s working visit to Mozambique, which will last until Friday, seven cooperation agreements in various sectors were signed.
