Paulo Rangel, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, admits that investments in defense are “a lot of money,” but explains their necessity. The government official’s statements were made exclusively to Now on Wednesday, where the NATO summit is currently taking place.
“It’s certainly a lot of money, but the Portuguese, like the Europeans, understand that we are in a situation where our defence is at stake,” he explained.
Rangel downplays the outcome of the North American elections and points to the agreement of various US presidents to explain their views.
“Every president since Obama has set a goal of investing 2% in defense. Whatever the North American administration, the commitment to NATO is strong,” he added.
The minister emphasizes that in recent years many countries have already reached the goal of 2% of GDP invested in defense. “The commitments made tomorrow will be irreversible, they will be mandatory for all states,” he specified.
Rangel warns that Volodymyr Zelensky will accept NATO commitments from Washington to support Ukraine.
“NATO is being deeply activated, with a focus on defence that can deter attacks like those from Russia against Ukraine,” he concluded.
