Former PSD president Rui Rio defended Thursday that the future Attorney General of the Republic (PGR) should be someone outside the Ministry of State (MP), criticizing Lucilia Gago and the corporatism of the petition signed by hundreds of lawyers.
“Despite the dangers that this may create within the corporation itself, I think it is becoming increasingly clear that a breath of fresh air is needed and it would be desirable for the profile to be external if we are to carry out I do not think that this is the most decisive reform of our justice system, but it is all the more decisive the greater the desire to change a large part of its functioning from a structural point of view,” he said.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting between some of the signatories of the “Manifesto on Justice Reform in Defense of the Democratic Rule of Law” and Ombudsman Maria Lucia Amaral, Rui Rio also suggested that the signatories of the manifesto did not seek to meet with the current head of the PGR, noting that it “would be an act of some hypocrisy” and useless, and criticized Lucilia Gago’s “lack of humility.”
“What shocked me most was that Lucilia Gago did not acknowledge the existence of problems and said, I think arrogantly: ‘I never thought about resigning.’ I don’t believe it,” he said.
“When we do something wrong, we can apologize. It doesn’t solve anything, but it’s normal, and it’s an act of humility. There is no act of humility here at all, I think it’s almost like a sovereign body. The MP is not a sovereign body, but prefers to behave like a state within a state,” Rui Rio said.
