Nine people died in road accidents over the weekend

According to preliminary data published on the website of the Republican National Guard (GNR), nine people were killed and 14 were seriously injured in traffic accidents on Saturday and Sunday.

From 00:00 Saturday to midnight Sunday, GNR recorded 361 accidents in its area of ​​operation, resulting in nine deaths, 14 serious injuries and 133 minor injuries.

On Saturday, 191 accidents were recorded, with four fatalities (in the districts of Aveiro, Viana do Castelo and Bragança), six serious injuries and 61 minor injuries.

According to the GNR, 170 accidents were recorded on Sunday, in which five people died (in the districts of Lisbon, Viana do Castelo and Setubal), eight were seriously injured and 72 were slightly injured.

The accident with the highest number of fatalities occurred on Sunday after a car that caught fire crashed in Melgaço, Viana do Castelo district, killing four young people, three at the scene and another who died on the way to the hospital (the latter is not included in the GNR).

As a result of the accident, two young people were seriously injured.

According to GNR, 1,039 accidents were registered from Monday to Friday, resulting in eight deaths: two on Monday in the districts of Aveiro and Guarda, one on Tuesday in Coimbra, one on Wednesday in Porto, two on Thursday in Aveiro and Santarém and two on Friday in Coimbra and Viseu.
