Catarina Viegas scored 20 points in all subjects and 200 points in the national exams.

Catarina Viegas, 17, from Viseu, is one of the best students in the country. She scored 20 points in all subjects and 200 points in the math, biology and geology exams, the results of the first stage of which were announced this Monday. He graduated from the primary school Colégio Imaculada Conceição and the secondary school Escola Alves Martins in Viseu.

“Of course, I studied for these grades, but don’t think that I’m one of those people who dedicate their whole life to studying, who only care about books. Nothing of the sort, I lead a completely normal life. I study, have fun, go for walks, date, play volleyball and do ballet. Oh, and I support Sporting,” he describes CM Katarina, who will apply for a course in bioengineering. “Above all, she is very focused, very curious and a perfectionist,” emphasizes Magda Barardo, a mother “very proud of her daughter’s dedication.” “Let him be an inspiration, not because of his grades, but because of how he achieves them,” says his stepfather, Kevin Barardo.

At the national level, the average score in mathematics was 121, up from 110 in 2023. In Portugal, the situation is reversed: this year’s average score of 111 is lower than last year’s 125.

The subjects with the most tests (37,730) were biology and geology, which fell from 114 to just 99, the only subjects below 100. In physics and chemistry A, taken by 33,570 students, the average score rose from 112 to 116. There was some good news in languages, with averages rising in English (114–141), French (111–138) and German (118–122). 236,060 tests were taken in 663 schools on the mainland, the Azores and Madeira, and abroad where the Portuguese curriculum is used.
