Former banker Ricardo Salgado will face a new trial in the independent Universo Espirito Santo process when he is charged with active corruption linked to former Banco do Brasil officials, the state ministry said on Thursday.
According to information released this Thursday by the General Directorate of Investigations and Criminal Cases (DCIAP), the Central Criminal Investigation Court confirmed on Monday the “commonality of the accusation” of the prosecutor’s office, which focused, among other things, on facts related to the Bank of Brazil.
The note said the criminal court had ruled against four defendants who had asked for an investigation into the crimes of active corruption prejudicial to international trade, passive corruption in the private sector and money laundering.
The only reason the accused were not charged was the crime of document forgery, which was also included in the indictment filed by the prosecutor.
Four other defendants who did not request the investigation will stand trial on DVIAP charges of money laundering and passive corruption in the private sector.
In this autonomous process, members of the GES financial structures (BES, ESBDUBAI), a member of the asset management department (GESTAR/ICG), two lawyers and a law firm were also charged.
At stake, the DCIAP points out, are credit lines on the interbank foreign exchange market (MMI) and credit lines in the context of documentary credits (letters of credit) with the former vice-president of Banco do Brasil and oil suppliers. The Venezuelan company PDVSA is also involved.
According to the DCIAP investigation, benefits from the commission of the alleged crimes totalling more than 12 million euros were discovered.
Also this week, the Lisbon Criminal Court brought to trial Ricardo Salgado, the former president of Banco Espírito Santo Angola (BESA), and three other defendants, fully confirming the prosecution’s accusations.
Former GES President Ricardo Salgado has been charged with five counts of breach of trust and one count of fraud in the BESA case.
