In recent days, the Judicial Police have carried out two police operations following an international operation to dismantle a drug trafficking ring in June, arresting four more suspects and seizing 154 kilograms of cocaine.
The National Unit for Combating Drug Trafficking (UNCTE) of the Judicial Police, with the support of the Tax and Customs Authority, has carried out two police operations in recent days, resulting in the seizure of 154 kilograms of cocaine transported in two sea containers, which entered the national territory through the port of Setúbal.
According to the judiciary, the drug was hidden in holes in the wooden structure of cargo pallets that were carrying a shipment of pineapples that had arrived from a Latin American country.
This ongoing operation, dubbed “Toro II”, follows another carried out last July that led to the dismantling of a criminal group involved in importing large quantities of cocaine from Latin America into the European continent.
The ongoing investigation follows an exchange of information within the Global Drug Intelligence Network, a pilot project funded by the European Union and in which PJ is participating, with the aim of strengthening and improving the speed of information sharing between different countries in the fight against large-scale drug trafficking.
During an operation carried out at the end of June last year, PS dismantled part of the network and detained four more foreigners aged between 33 and 52, as well as 251 kilograms of cocaine, disguised in the same way.
The judiciary adds that investigations continue to assess the contours of the network.
During the June operation, the seized drug also ended up in containers of pineapples through the port of Setubal, but the containers were later transported to a warehouse in the center of the country (Aveiro), where the drug will be removed from the pallets and then continued in what all points to Spain, the SP said at the time.
