US President Joe Biden dropped his candidacy for the White House on Sunday, saying he would give an explanation this week.
The announcement was made on Joe Biden’s social media account X.
The US President has said he will remain president until the end of his term, which ends in January 2025.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while I intended to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interests of my party and country that I step down and focus solely on discharging my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote.
By dropping his reelection bid, Biden clears the way for Vice President Kamala Harris to run for the top spot on the ticket, becoming the first Black woman to do so in the nation’s history.
Biden’s announcement follows a wave of public and private pressure from Democratic lawmakers and party officials to drop out of the race following his performance in a televised debate last month against Republican rival Donald Trump.

“My first decision as our party’s nominee in 2020 was to choose Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it was the best decision I made. Today, I want to express my full support and encourage Kamala to become our party’s nominee this year,” Biden said in a statement posted on social media.
“Democrats – it’s time to unite and win [Donald] Trump (Republican candidate). Let’s do it,” he urged.
