A military-grade explosive device – a grenade – was discovered in a municipal reception center for the homeless in downtown Sao Paulo, Brazil, causing great concern among staff. Teams from the municipal civil guard, firefighters, the GATE anti-explosive unit and the special tactical action group of the military police sealed off the site.
In special clothing, GATE agents retrieved an explosive device, it is not known how it got there or for what purpose. The grenade was found in a storage room of the temporary center Acolchida Prates I, located in the Bom Retiro district, in the old center of the city, a region where thousands of people in need live.
The centre receives large numbers of homeless people daily who go there in search of shelter, food, bathing, and medical and social assistance. Authorities have already launched an investigation to find out who brought the explosive device to the site, whether it was a threat or someone forgot it or left it there to pick it up later, but the object was discovered during a routine daily inspection by social workers after one group had left and another had arrived.
