US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned on Tuesday following the assassination attempt on Donald Trump.
Kimberly Cheatle took responsibility for the shooting, calling it the Secret Service’s biggest failure since former US President Ronald Reagan was shot dead in 1981.
The Secret Service, which is responsible for protecting the former and current US presidents, was thrown into crisis after Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was shot in the right ear and died at a rally in Pennsylvania on July 13.
The criticism of the Secret Service centered on a security failure on the roof of an industrial building where the shooter was stationed. The site, just 140 yards from where Trump spoke, was declared outside the Secret Service’s security perimeter during the event, a decision that was sharply criticized by former agents and lawmakers.
