The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, considered this Sunday that September 11, 2001 is of “very special significance” in connection with the challenges posed by the war in Ukraine.
The President of Portugal commemorates the anniversary of the terrorist attacks in the United States of America (USA) in a message published on the website of the Presidency of the Republic, linking the events of 21 years ago to current world politics.
“This year, September 11, 2001 is of particular importance. The outbreak of war in Ukraine is more than just a European event, it is a global event.
And this underlines the process, the harbinger of which was 9/11,” the President’s message says.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa emphasizes that the current crisis “is coming to reinforce the growing need for multilateralism in the peaceful resolution of geostrategic conflicts and the role of international organizations in joining efforts to solve global problems.”
The President of the Republic adds that “September 11 was a clash of ideas about life and the world, calling into question the basic values of respect for the dignity of people, freedom and universal tolerance.”
“The moment we are living after the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation shows how far we are from the values and principles that guided the creation of the United Nations and the adoption of its Charter,” he concludes.
Nearly 3,000 people died 21 years ago in the United States when an al-Qaeda terrorist group hijacked three planes that crashed into the Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon in Virginia.
Another plane crashed on a field in Pennsylvania.
