The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, supports the position of the Portuguese government and six other European countries that demand transparency in the results of the elections in Venezuela, the presidential administration announced.
The President of the Republic supports the position of the Government, “requiring the disclosure of all electoral protocols, in order to ensure the transparency of the election results and respect for the rights of all Venezuelans, as well as ensuring democracy and freedoms.”
The information was published on the official page of the President of the Republic on the same day that a joint statement was released by seven European countries, in which they called on the Venezuelan authorities to quickly publish all the protocols of Sunday’s vote in order to guarantee “full transparency and integrity of the electoral process.”
The joint declaration was signed by the governments of Portugal, Italy, France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Poland, and in it political leaders expressed great concern about the situation in Venezuela following last Sunday’s presidential elections.
In addition to asking for the election protocols to be made public, the leaders also wrote in the declaration that the process must respect the rights of Venezuelans, especially their political leaders.
“We strongly condemn any detentions or threats against them,” they said.
On Monday, Venezuela’s National Electoral Commission declared Nicolás Maduro the winner of Sunday’s presidential election, with 51.2% of the vote.
In turn, the opposition majority bloc published the results on its internet portal, which allegedly brought a convincing victory to its candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, who enjoys the support of opposition leader María Corina Machado, who is not allowed to participate in the elections by the Chavista regime.
Since then, there have been demonstrations, particularly against the regime of Nicolás Maduro, some of which have been violently suppressed.
At least 13 people were killed and more than 1,200 were detained.
