Three men and a woman aged between 33 and 57 were arrested by the PPR on suspicion of stealing 150 kilograms of watermelon and 11 kilograms of onions in the municipality of Aljustrel, it was reported on Wednesday.
A statement from the National Republican Guard (GNR) said four suspects in the theft of agricultural products in the town of Ervidel, municipality of Aljustrel, Beja district, were arrested red-handed on Sunday by soldiers from the Territorial Post of Castro Green.
Following a report of the theft, Guard soldiers managed to locate and intercept the vehicle with four passengers, verifying that they were suspects in the theft, the statement said.
The police investigation also led to the recovery and confiscation of the stolen materials, namely 150 kilograms of watermelon and 11 kilograms of onions, as well as a car.
The suspects were declared defendants, the facts were referred to the Orike Court and the seized products were returned to their rightful owner, the guard said.
The action was supported by the Criminal Investigation Centre and the Nature and Environment Protection Service of the Almodóvar territorial detachment, as well as the Aljustrel and Beja territorial posts.
The GNR is developing, until February 16 next year, Operation Campo Seguro 2024, the purpose of which is to strengthen patrols, inspections and awareness-raising in agricultural and forestry farms in order to prevent crime in general and theft in specific situations, as well as possible situations of human trafficking.
