Ethiopian Lamecha Girma, the world record holder in the 3000m hurdles, collapsed Wednesday during the final of the 2024 Paris Olympics and left the Stade de France on a stretcher and in a neck brace.
Girma fell on the last lap of the final when he kicked one of the obstacles while trying to gain position and fell helplessly, hitting his head on the tartan.
The athlete remained motionless and apparently unconscious on the track and was given medical attention at the scene.
The 23-year-old world record holder was carried out of the stadium on a stretcher with a neck brace after several minutes of observation, and there is currently no information on his health condition.
The race was won by Moroccan Soufiane El Bakkali, who reclaimed the title he won in Tokyo 2020, with North American Kenneth Rooks coming in second and Kenyan Abraham Kibiwot third.
